Water Shoes
While on our Lake Powell trip, I was reminded how much I love my water shoes. (They are made by Astral.) Scott bought them for me at REI, but they are available other places as well.
I've had a few pairs of water shoes in the past, and these are by far my favorite. I think the weep holes in the soles are brilliant. The mesh on the toe area is small so it doesn't allow pebbles in. The back of the shoe is designed to either be worn as a regular shoe, or you can bend the heal down for a slip on type shoe.
This Powell trip I wore them kayaking and then wading through the sandy riverbed and lake. I hiked in them and they gave great traction. I didn't get a single foot sore. I've had these a few years, and I've never gotten a blister. Granted, I'm not wearing them for a regular hike, just when I know there will be water involved.
I find them quite handy out in the river as well, catching the tubers, or moving logs. I love them. This is the new and improved version below:
